As with many other victims of sexual and domestic abuse, elders often do not report sexual or domestic violence. Their reasons, however, are often much more complex: sometimes the abuse is at the hands of a caregiver; they are afraid they won’t be believed or there will be retaliation for telling; or they do not know where to seek services.
Maine’s sexual assault support centers and domestic violence resource projects provide support and advocacy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence across the age span, their families, and concerned others. This includes a 24-hour crisis and support line for sexual abuse survivors and a 24-hour helpline for domestic abuse victims, their families, and anyone who wishes to have more information. Sexual assault support centers and domestic violence resource projects also provide support groups, crisis intervention and information, referrals for mental health and other community resources, and many other services.
